🥣 Neer Moru (Spiced Buttermilk Drink) – Adding curry leaves, ginger, green chilli, jeera, hing, coriander leaves with buttermilk, mix nicely and drink. After coming from sun, if you drink this, you will feel “life is back again.”
🥣 Kadhi – In North India, they make Kadhi with buttermilk and besan flour, temper with mustard, jeera, methi seeds and curry leaves. Eaten with hot rice and roti.
🥣 Buttermilk for Dosa Batter Fermentation – When grandma makes dosa batter, if curd is less sour, she adds little old buttermilk to ferment nicely.
🥣 Making Soft Chapathi Dough – Some people knead chapathi dough with buttermilk to make it soft, tasty and slightly tangy.
🥣 Soaking Bajji Batter – Adding buttermilk instead of water in bajji batter gives nice taste.

1. Affects Digestion
Buttermilk is good for digestion in daytime. But night time drinking can cause bloating, gastric problem, diarrhoea, indigestion problems. Specially people having lactose intolerance will suffer more.

Buttermilk has little acidic nature. People with acidity, reflux, heartburn problems – if they drink at night, problem becomes double only. Grandma used to scold, “Don’t drink mor at night if you have burning chest.”

This may shock you – drinking buttermilk can increase weight. Because buttermilk has little fat, so calories also will be there. Night time if you drink one tumbler buttermilk means, it becomes extra calories added to day food. Slowly it increases weight.

In olden days, people called buttermilk “moor perukki” because they add lot of water and drink it after meals to feel light and cool. My grandma used to say, “Add pinch of hing and jeera powder in buttermilk, gas problem will run away.”
