Grandma’s Secret Sweetener! Discover Why. Is Healthier, Tastier, and Coconut Sugar Loved by Our Elders More Than White Sugar!
Coconut Sugar – The Healthier Sweetness Our Elders Loved.
You know what, my grandma always used to say, “If you want to eat sweet, eat something that don’t harm your body, kanna.” Those days they never used white sugar like we use today. They used jaggery, palm sugar, or coconut sugar for daily needs.
I still remember, my mother used to add coconut sugar in our morning coffee or ragi porridge. Even now, elders will say, “Coconut sugar is good for sugar patients also, don’t worry.”
But what really is this coconut sugar, and why they say like that? Let’s see slowly like how grandma explains stories.
How Coconut Sugar is Made?
Coconut sugar is made from the sap or nectar of coconut palm flowers. It’s not made from the coconut fruit or flesh like how we think first time.
The making process is beautiful actually. First, farmers climb the tall coconut trees, cut the flower buds slightly, and collect the sweet liquid that comes out. This liquid is called ‘padaneer’ in villages. Then they boil it nicely in big wide vessels. Slowly, as it boils, it becomes thick like syrup and then it solidifies to sugar crystals or blocks.
When it becomes block, they break it into small pieces and sell as coconut sugar in shops. Some people will think it is same like palm jaggery, but both are different. Palm jaggery comes from palm tree, coconut sugar comes from coconut tree flower nectar.
Why Coconut Sugar is Better than White Sugar?
My grandma always scolded me for adding too much white sugar in tea. She used to say,
> “White sugar will eat your bones and teeth, kanna. Eat something natural.”
She was not wrong. Coconut sugar is better because it has low glycaemic index (GI) compared to normal sugar. GI is a number that tells how fast food increases your blood sugar levels. Coconut sugar GI is around 35, but white sugar is around 60-65. So for sugar patients or pre-diabetic people, it is a better choice. But that doesn’t mean you can eat unlimited, okay!
